About Jay

The man behind the stone

A Rock Shop is a one-man operation built on patience, precision, and a deep love for working with natural materials.

How it started

Jay has always been drawn to things that last. Long before A Rock Shop existed, he was the kind of person who noticed the weight of a river rock in his hand, the way light catches the grain of a fieldstone, the permanence of something pulled from the earth.

Sand engraving gave him a way to put that permanence to work. The process is simple in concept — a pressurized stream of fine abrasive cuts clean, deep lines into stone — but the craft is in the setup: choosing the right rock, designing the layout, masking the surface, and running the machine with a steady hand.

Every piece Jay makes starts with a conversation. He wants to know what the words mean, why the numbers matter, who the piece is for. That context shapes everything from the font choice to the depth of the cut.

The craft

Sand engraving is one of the oldest and most durable ways to mark stone. Jay uses it to create pieces that will outlast anything printed, painted, or pressed.

Natural stone only

Every piece uses real river rock, fieldstone, or flat natural stone — no resin, no composite. The material is part of the art.

Sand engraved deep

The engraving cuts well below the surface, so it won't fade, chip, or wear away with weather or time.

Custom every time

No templates, no stock designs. Jay lays out every piece from scratch based on what you want it to say.

Made with care

As a one-man shop, Jay personally handles every order from start to finish — no outsourcing, no shortcuts.
